My Teaching Philisophy

When a new group of students arrive on the first day of class I always say, “We are learning how to be artists in this classroom and I want you all to think of the art classroom as your art studio.” This sets the stage for the rest of the year. I want to give my students the tools and guidance to find their own artistic identity. The art studio is a place where students can explore while learning the fundamental aspects of art.

Every student is unique and can create their own style of art. I want to create a classroom environment that engages every student. This is my opportunity to create an art studio that pushes students to take risks, become creative thinkers and acquire problem-solving skills. My goal is to create lesson plans that allow the students to develop their personal identity as artists.  In order to accomplish this goal the students will play an integral role in their artwork.  I will give them the opportunity to explore different materials and techniques. This process will enable students to transform their artistic thinking and personally connect with their artwork.  I want to encourage students to think outside the box and bring art beyond the classroom. Students will learn how to become innovative thinkers, which is a skill that can be used in all other content areas.

As an art teacher, I believe in creating an art community that stretches across students, teachers, administrators, families and faculty. I can do this by inviting families to student art shows, seeking local artists to come into the art class, and by displaying student art work throughout the community and in the school hallways. This strong art community can help support each student throughout their education.
